2011 - 2012

Back

JANUARY 1st - LOCAL HOLIDAY

Many shops and businesses will be closed.

JANUARY 25th - BURNS NIGHT

This is a celebration of one of our national poets. Robert Burns wrote in the Scots language, which is different from English, but related to it. You will have fun trying to follow some of his poems. A Burns Supper will generally include haggis, mashed potatoes and mashed turnip - the large turnips with yellow flesh - as well as plenty of other food. A guest may recite one of Burns' poems, the "Address to the Haggis" in honour of its wonderful flavour, before it is cut open and shared among the guests. After the meal it is the practice for guests to be invited to make speeches and recite poems.

APRIL 2nd - LOCAL HOLIDAY

Many shops and businesses will be closed.

APRIL 6th - GOOD FRIDAY

This is the day when Christians remember that Jesus was killed. You may wonder why such a sad day is called "Good" Friday. It is because on that day Christians believe that God did us good. He did what was good for us. We believe that Jesus died in our place, taking the punishment for the things we have done wrong. You may see hot cross buns for sale, a traditional English food for Good Friday.

APRIL 8th - EASTER SUNDAY

Early on the Sunday morning three women came to Jesus' tomb and found he was no longer there. This is a glad day for Christians when we remember that God brought Jesus back to life after he was dead. It is a day of hope. Some people give their children painted eggs or chocolate eggs to eat on Easter day. You may see children rolling their eggs downhill in the parks. The date of Easter is the Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21st March (the date assumed for the spring equinox ).
