CAMPERDOWN PARK

People who made their wealth in the jute mills made a habit of donating large pieces of land to the people of the city to provide parks such as Baxter Park and Caird Park (now with a restaurant in Mains Castle). Camperdown Park once belonged to the family of Admiral Duncan, famous for his role in the sea battle of Camperdown. Camperdown Park is also worth a visit, especially if you have children with you. There are large areas of fields and woodland, a Wildlife Centre like a small zoo and a wonderful playground. In the playground someone has used their imagination to build all sorts of unusual toys for children of all ages.

The best parts of the playground are free and you can have a lot of fun for nothing, but if you plan to go into the Wildlife Centre or on some of the rides (bikes, cars, boats, trampolines) you will need some money. The annual Dundee Flower Show also takes place in Camperdown Park, similar to flower shows and local fairs that traditionally take place in towns and villages throughout the U.K.

If you have transport, you can reach Crombie and Monikie Country Parks beside resevoirs just outside Dundee. These are both excellent for trips and woodland walks. If you want to go as a group, why not phone and book a barbecue site first?

UNIVERSITY OF DUNDEE BOTANICAL GARDENS

These gardens are really beautiful and provide a peaceful setting for a walk. We think you will like the gardens. You have to pay a small amount towards the upkeep of the gardens to get in.

OLYMPIA LEISURE CENTRE

The large swimming pool here is great fun with waves and fast rivers and slides. It is a great place but it isn't cheap, especially if you have a large family, so if you just want to swim it might be better to go to the University pool or the more ordinary pool at Lochee.

SPORTS CENTRES

There are sports facilities at the Universities but, depending where you live, also look out for Dundee International Sports Centre, The Dick McTaggart Centre, The Lynch Centre and The Douglas Centre. Ancrum Road Centre has a programme of outdoor pursuits too.

Dundee has two major football teams. You can see Dundee Football Club at Dens Park and Dundee United Football Club at Tannadice. There are also hockey clubs and several good golf courses.

STACK LEISURE PARK

Built beside the tall stack or chimney of Cox's mill, this area offers ten pin bowling and a number of places to eat.

DUNDEE CENTRAL LIBRARY

Situated above the Wellgate Centre, this is a good library with a wide range of books. It is a pleasant place to study and has the small Weavers' Cafe selling snacks, enjoyed by those in the library and shoppers too. There are computers here giving internet access. You can borrow books, videos and music on CDs and tapes. You can also read papers and look at a wide range of journals in the reference section. It is possible to order books that are not on the shelves. You can join the library to borrow books if you provide proof that you live in Dundee.

CAIRD HALL AND MARRYAT HALL

These halls are in the beautiful building that dominates the City Square. There are many good concerts at the Caird Hall and smaller exhibitions and events in the Marryat Hall. You can obtain details of what is on in the box office in City Square. Students can see the Royal Scottish National Orchestra there at a reduced rate if there are any seats left at the start of the concert. Take your matriculation card to show you are a student. However, if you want to be certain of a seat, buy a ticket in advance at the full rate.

THE REP

This is an excellent theatre. Call in to get a programme.

DUNDEE CONTEMPORARY ARTS CENTRE

This is Dundee's newest place to visit. As well as a large collection of modern art, it also houses a film theatre with a wide range of interesting films. Good art exhibitions also take place at Duncan of Jordanstone College (part of the University of Dundee) at the end of each academic year and occasionally at Dundee Art Society's gallery in Roseangle.
